This test is performed in the clinic with a radiology technician. An ultrasound takes pictures of the kidney, bladder, prostate, and other organs to determine whether there are any abnormalities. For bladder or pelvic ultrasounds, patients need to keep a full bladder prior to the procedure and wear loose clothing. There is no particular preparation required for a kidney ultrasound. A prostate ultrasound uses a rectal probe, and it is advantageous to have a bowel movement the same day prior to this test. We encourage people to drink an 8 oz glass of water just prior to any ultrasound. There are no restrictions after the study.
