Prostate biopsies are performed in clinic with the prostate ultrasound. A physician places a spring-loaded, small needle through the ultrasound probe and obtains the biopsies. There is mild discomfort involved. The patient is given antibiotics after the procedure. He may experience a small amount of blood with his next bowel movement and have some slight burning with urination. There are no restrictions after the procedure. Patients who are taking blood-thinning medications or who have prosthetic material in their body (i.e. heart valve) should inform their physician. Biopsy results generally take 5-7 working days.
