Prostate Ultrasound and Biopsy

Prostate biopsies are performed in clinic with the prostate ultrasound. A physician places a spring-loaded, small needle through the ultrasound probe and obtains the biopsies. Usually, 12 biopsies are performed. A local anesthetic agent is placed into this area to minimize any pain from the actual biopsy. There may be mild discomfort involved.

All men receive antibiotics to take starting on the day of the biopsy and a few days after. There has been an increase in resistance to antibiotics due to widespread antibiotic use. If you experience fevers above 101.5, chills, sweats or difficulty with urination within a few days of the procedure, please call the on-call doctor immediately. It is normal to experience a small amount of blood with ejaculation, bowel movements and urination. There are no restrictions after the procedure. Patients who are taking blood-thinning medications or who have prosthetic material in their body (i.e. heart valve, hip replacement) should inform their physician. Biopsy results generally take 7-14 working days and you must schedule a follow up visit to obtain the results.
